Many factors can affect our ability get a good night’s sleep. Some factors you may already know about, such as noise or use of technology, but what you might not know is just how much your bedroom colour scheme can help you relax and fall asleep more quickly.
The bedroom is the place we need to create the right conditions for rest and relaxation, and colours have a big influence on our mood and emotions. By redesigning your bedroom colour scheme you can not only enjoy a better night’s sleep, but also wake up feeling more energised.
We’ve spoken to interior designer, Ella Jade from Ella Jade Interiors, who advises how to redesign your bedroom colour scheme to help you achieve a more natural, deep sleep.
‘When I design any room in the house, but especially bedrooms, I want to understand the character and preferences of the person.’
‘The bedroom is the one room in the house that is completely personal to each individual. Whereas the kitchen or living room is more welcoming to guests, the bedroom is a place of serenity, of relaxation and revitalisation.’
Colour can significantly affect our emotions; it impacts mood, feelings and behaviour, so adding the right colour to our bedrooms can actually help us create a comfortable and relaxing space to sleep. Many people are afraid to stray from the beige. They use neutral colours in their bedrooms as they feel it is easier to maintain, but beige, if not used correctly, can be bland and emotionless, and people won’t receive any feeling from the colour.
‘When designing your bedroom, as an individual, think about your favourite places, perhaps a certain holiday destination or certain memories that make you feel happy and relaxed.’
‘These memories always have colour schemes related to them. Often, clients feel these particular colours are the ones they will use for their bedroom.’ Soft Colours Soft colours found in nature are the most relaxing, according to Ella; ‘They can provide a light and airy feel to the room – try using pale colours like blue, green and pink’.

‘Overall, it’s about choosing a colour scheme that feels like you, and adds to your mood when you get home’, Ella explains.
