Bedrooms in TV and film are more than just places to sleep. They reflect our favourite characters’ personalities and give us a sneak peek into their safe havens.

From the extravagant golden elephant room in Moulin Rouge!, to Harry’s cupboard under the stairs, these iconic bedrooms linger in our memories long after the credits roll.

In this blog, we’ll rank six of the most unforgettable bedrooms from the big and small screen, and explore how to take inspiration from them and inject them into your own bedroom.

Lights, cameras, action!

1. Andy’s Room – Toy Story

Woody: “Now let’s all be polite, and give whatever-it-is up there a nice, big Andy’s-room welcome!”

First on our list is Andy’s room from Pixar’s beloved Toy Story. Home not just to Andy, but to all our favourite toys, this iconic sky-blue bedroom has everything a kid could dream of! Books, games, posters and toys, Andy’s got it all. And he loves a theme! In the first film, Andy’s bedroom is filled with cowboy merch (very on-trend for 2024, Andy), but in Toy Story 2, eagle-eyed fans will note his room has a mix of both cowboy and space themes, in an ode to his equal love for Woody and Buzz.

Styling tips: If there’s one thing we’re taking away from Andy’s iconic bedroom, it’s his cloudy sky wallpaper. Now, you may not be able to find an exact match (and if you do, please tell us where you find it…), but you can certainly copy this style with a different bold wallpaper. Covering your bedroom in a vibrant, patterned wallpaper, or even just creating one statement wall, is a great way to inject some fun into your room and is sure to be a talking point with guests. As Woody says, “Reach for the sky!”

2. Harry Potter’s Bedroom – Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

Harry: “I’ll be in my bedroom, making no noise and pretending I don’t exist.”

Calling all Potterheads! One of the world’s most recognisable bedrooms (if you can call it that) is Harry Potter’s iconic cupboard under the stairs at the Dursley household. Although it’s dusty, cramped and arguably home to many a spider, this tiny excuse for a bedroom has had people flocking from all over the world to visit 4 Privet Drive.

Styling tips: Now, we’re definitely not recommending that you demote your kids to the box room. However, credit where credit is due: it’s an incredible space saver! To give your child a cosy hideout den that’s all their own (but far less confined than a cupboard), consider a high-sleeper. These cleverly compact beds come in a variety of designs with added desks, storage and even sofas – the ideal space to sleep, study (spells) and read their favourite Potter books over and over again.

3. Elizabeth James’ Bedroom – The Parent Trap

Meredith:You’re Elizabeth James?!”

Elizabeth: “…Guilty.”

It’s no secret that the London townhouse in The Parent Trap is drooled over by many. From the picture-perfect front door to the warm inviting glow of the terracotta staircase, Grandfather’s mahogany study, to Martin’s (the Butler) shimmery silverware in the dining room; the whole house is quintessentially British and oozes elegance.

But if we had to pick one room of the house to copy? It’s Elizabeth James’ bedroom. Take in the dusty rose wallpaper, beautifully ornate furniture and, in true Nancy Meyers-style, the biggest marshmallow of a bed that you’ve ever laid eyes on! It radiates femininity and timeless style.

Styling tips: To emulate Nancy Meyers’ unique combination of luxury and cosiness, we recommend starting with the centrepiece of the bedroom: the bed. Keep things classy with an upholstered bed and crisp white bed sheets (or silk if you’re feeling fancy) and accessorise with gold ornaments, picture frames and lamps. Make sure you have an elegant dressing table with your favourite perfumes and skincare on display, just as Elizabeth would.

4. Regina George’s Bedroom – Mean Girls

Regina: “It was my parent’s bedroom. But I made them trade me.”

Noughties fans, we’ve got one for you. There isn’t a more iconic teen bedroom than Regina George’s magnificent master suite in Mean Girls. Combining opulence with an excess of pink trimmings, there’s a reason we’re still talking about it, 20 years on.

Styling tips: To channel your inner Mean Girl, make sure your bed is the focal point of your room. An easy way to do this is by adding a statement headboard, such as our Sleepeezee Messina Headboard with diamante button detailing. Don’t forget to style with an equally extravagant pink bedspread and plenty of throw cushions. For added luxury, invest in some silk or satin bedsheets. They look ultra glam, and are even great for your hair and skin whilst you get your beauty sleep in, too! Bonus.

Or, why not take the colour scheme one step further and invest in an entirely pink bed? It’s super on-trend thanks to the #Barbiecore movement and “the plastics” would certainly approve. As Gretchen Wieners would say, “so fetch”.

5. Satine’s Bedroom – Moulin Rouge!

Zidler: “A magnificent, opulent, tremendous, stupendous, gargantuan, bedazzlement, a sensual ravishment. It will be: Spectacular Spectacular.”

Arguably the most decadent, over-the-top bedroom to ever grace our screens is Satine’s bedroom in the hit musical, Moulin Rouge!. This glamorous boudoir is absolutely dripping in gold, features layers of luxurious red fabrics, and has plenty of lit candles for a sensual atmosphere. Not to mention the fact that it’s inside a literal golden elephant – this bedroom design is certainly not for the faint hearted.

Styling tips: Looking for a little bit of decadence but don’t have space for a solid gold elephant? No problem. The secret to copying the vibe of Satine’s bedroom (on a budget) is to get clever with your use of colours and materials. Consider adding a velvet bed for a touch of glam, such as our Mount Velvet-Finish Ottoman Bed Frame in a rich navy. Plus, it’s available with a matching velvet bedside table and blanket box that Satine would surely approve of.

In terms of colours, red and gold evoke a warm and confident vibe in a bedroom. If you’re afraid of going overboard, start by injecting your colour in small doses. Use red as an accent colour with items such as throw cushions, blankets, and perhaps a rug. Gold looks great on accessories like picture frames, candlestick holders and light switches. Even just a touch of colour is a great way to breathe life into a room and show off your personality.

6. Rory Gilmore’s Bedroom – Gilmore Girls

Rory: “I just take a book with me everywhere. It’s a habit.

I live in two worlds. One is a world of books.”

Nothing says welcome home quite like the cosy, fictional town of Stars Hollow in Gilmore Girls. Stuck in what seems like an eternal autumn, watching this show makes you want to grab a cup of coffee from Luke’s, turn on every lamp in the house and curl up on Rory’s bed with a good book. Speaking of which, Rory’s bedroom is the ultimate teen girl’s dream: it’s homey, snug and, of course, filled with copious amounts of books.

Styling tips: To achieve this look, embrace ‘shabby chic’. Opt for warm tones like pale yellows and creams, but don’t worry too much about coordination – that’s where the charm comes in. Go for a wooden bed, and dress with a patchwork quilt for an inviting, ‘lived-in’ feel.

To create a reading nook that Rory Gilmore would be jealous of, choose your favourite corner of the room to add a bookshelf, and place an armchair next to it to snuggle down in. Our Vicenza chair in mustard would do the trick. Now all that’s left to do is add your carefully curated collection of novels. Happy reading!
