With such a versatile range of tones, purple is an excellent choice for the bedroom.

There are lots of options no matter what kind of mood you’re trying to create, from rich shades like plum to light and playful pastels, it’s a colour that lots of people find relaxing. The colour of our bedroom can really impact how we feel and can even affect our sleep quality. As purple can be warm or cool-toned, it isn’t too energising so is perfect for making your bedroom as soothing as possible.

1. Dark and dramatic

When it comes to creating a sleep sanctuary, going dark can be a stunning option.

If you want your room to be cosy and intimate, try shades like plum, wine, or aubergine. These colours have rich, slightly red undertones that can make your bedroom warmer and more inviting. Create a dramatic backdrop to a bold bed like the Hugo Nickel metal bed frame. Perfect for fans of romantic and gothic interior design.

2. Relaxing lavender

Often called French Lavender after the large-flowered variety of the plant, this shade is super soft and delicate. Lavender is one of the best colours for the bedroom because it is so gentle and calming, just like its namesake.

You can choose a paint colour such as white with a barely-there purple touch to give your bedroom some dimension while keeping it muted.

We would recommend lavender accessories to tie together a sweet, relaxing design that will your bedroom feel like a moment of zen. Finishes like lavender curtains, seating, and blankets can add moments of colour without being too busy, just right for curling up with a good book and cup of Lady Grey.

3. Lilac and grey

A classic pair, lilac and grey go beautifully together. As both are serene colours, there are tons of possibilities when it comes to how to achieve this design.

This a great example of understanding colour theory and how to choose contrasting shades that will complement each other. Lilac has a pinker undertone, which makes it more playful and warmer to the eye, which can offset a cool grey, making them a stylish contrast.

Go for a fog grey on your walls to make a lilac bed like the Tempur Duke Velvet-Finish ottoman really pop. This bed is super soft with a statement, fluted headboard that makes for a gorgeous centrepiece. You can add bedding with varying shades of greys and purples to layer a seamless colour palette that’s versatile and timeless.

4. Jewel tones

Historically, purple has been the colour of royalty, prized for the depth and vibrancy of the hue. Now more accessible in the modern day, it hasn’t lost any of its majesty and works beautifully with other jewel-toned colours.

Design a bedroom fit for aristocracy with deep purples, greens, and blues, which complement gold and brass finishes magnificently. You’ll want to stick to sumptuous materials like velvet, satin, and dark wood, that look expensive and high-quality. And if you really want to go all out, add a lavish headboard such as the Sleepeezee Buckler headboard that comes in greys, greens, and burnt orange.

5. Floral accents

The natural world is abundant with shades of purple from delicate lilacs, mesmerising orchids, and playful pansies. Bringing these into the bedroom can add some life to your design with so much variety, and there are plenty of ways to do so.

For a subtle touch, actual flowers are a wonderful addition to the bedroom. If you don’t get enough light (or don’t have a green thumb!), fake flowers are just as lovely as the real thing and won’t need replacing. Alternatively, add florals with decorative wallpaper, which can be as simple or abstract as you like – from large, modern prints, to more traditional, cottage-style patterns. If you want something you can change up, then floral bed sheets or artwork are also a great way to spruce up the room but can be switched out when your mood or the seasons change.

6. Purple lighting

In recent years, LED lights have become all the rage, especially with Gen Z and we love it.

Colourful and simple, fairy lights are a nice way to keep the lighting of your room low and relaxing, which is extremely important when trying to foster a good sleep routine. It can also have a big impact on your overall design, harsh or cool lighting can wash out certain colours and make it feel a bit underwhelming. Try to go with warm, more natural lighting to realise your vision.

Available in a range of colours and effects, some LED lights can give you the option to bathe your bedroom in some fun shades. Give your sleep space a moody, other-worldly atmosphere with some purple lights and thank us later.

7. Whimsical kids’ rooms

Finally, shades of purple make a wonderful choice in children’s rooms! Little girls and boys will love the playful tones of a purple room.

Use light purples like lilac and lavender on the walls for calming but creative feel to the room that encourages them to express themselves. Especially if your toddler wants everything to match their favourite colours, purples can work to make some wonderfully cheerful designs like the ones included on our kids’ beds.

It’s a great accent colour against neutrals, so you can easily match purple finishes to a room as they grow and their tastes change.
