Make your master suite somewhere you can both fall in love with by browsing our harmonious bedroom ideas for couples.

Designing how your bedroom looks is no small task – even if it’s just your own! So naturally, when you share a sleeping space with your partner, making design decisions that you’re both happy with can be even harder.

When playing house, you’ve got two different opinions to consider, varying mattress preferences, favourite colour schemes and different sleeping (or snoring!) patterns to account for.

“Decorating for two can seem daunting, but to avoid disagreement, try to find common ground on colours, styles or eras that inspire you both. Don’t forget about functionality either; your space needs to be somewhere you can both comfortably cohabit and keep clutter-free. Aesthetics are important, but remember to prioritise elements of the room that will contribute to your wellbeing and quality of life. By doing this, you’ll create a bedroom that stands the test of time.”

As our Interiors Expert Whinnie Williams says, the bedroom is more than just a place to get your 9 hours of sleep. It’s a sacred space to unwind, relax and spend time with your other half. It should also combine a mix of your tastes. After all, it’s a place for both of you to relax – so it should feel 50/50 yours.

Struggling to strike a balance? In this blog, we explore the very best bedroom ideas for couples, focusing on creating a personalised space that reflects both partners’ styles.

We’ll show you how to select a cohesive colour palette that blends each of your preferences, along with recommendations for furniture that accommodates both styles. By respecting each of your unique tastes, you can create a harmonious bedroom design that showcases your personalities equally, resulting in a cosy, shared sanctuary that you’ll both love to come home to.

Lovebirds, this one’s for you…

1. Find a cohesive colour palette to blend both styles

One of the first design choices that you’ll likely need to make as a couple is your colour scheme. Finding a happy medium here is key. Too pink and floral may look overly feminine, but too many dark tones and bold materials like leather and glass could give off “bachelor pad” vibes.

Try to strike a balance between your two tastes. Talk about colours, patterns and fabrics that you both like and allow each of you a couple of vetoes for anything you really hate. To achieve a truly balanced aesthetic, try mixing different shades of tones that you both love. Neutral and earth tones can be a great place start as they’re easy to layer, incorporating multiple shades without overwhelming the space. Think sandy beiges, soft sages and warm browns.

Alternatively, look to a bit of colour psychology for inspiration. Blue is widely regarded as the most calming colour. Whether this is because it reminds us of peaceful blue skies or rolling ocean waves, it’s clear to see why pale blue is a common bedroom colour choice for those who want to create a dreamy haven. Plus, it’s easy to style! Pair your pale blue walls with white or cream, as we’ve done with our Charlie bed frame, and you’ve got a peaceful snoozing zone.

2. Create symmetry for balance and connection

If you lose the fight on colour, you can still create a refined aesthetic by keeping things symmetrical. Not only is this good for balance and energy (check out point number 6 for more info!), but it can create a boutique hotel vibe in your home. And who doesn’t want that?

The easiest way to make your bedroom symmetrical is by adding a bedside table on either side of your bed. Now, both of you have your own drawer and space to keep all of your bedtime essentials. Goodbye, clutter!

To continue the coordination, try matching your bedside tables to your bed. For example, our Lucia bedside table perfectly complements the Lucia upholstered bed frame, for a balanced, cohesive aesthetic. Or, if you want to take your symmetry game to the next level, why not consider an opulent hotel bed? Now you have an excuse to ask your partner to bring you breakfast in bed every day! Room service anyone?

3. Choose furniture that accommodates both partners’ needs

If you constantly find yourselves bickering over duvet-hogging or space stealing, a bedroom makeover is the perfect opportunity to invest in a larger bed.

Our super-king beds offer that all-important extra space and luxurious comfort for couples who love to spread out. Plus, they perfectly support a super king mattress (6ft x 6ft 6 inches), meaning you won’t have to worry about finding a mattress to fit it. Now that’s a match made in heaven for lie-ins.

When it comes to the mattress itself, try a split tension mattress if you can’t agree on an optimum support level for both of you. These clever mattresses offer differing support levels on each side of the mattress, so you can both be perfectly comfortable. And why not go one step further with a Sleepmotion U&I bed? This innovative motion bed comprises two halves, which can each be adjusted independently to find your ideal sleep position (it can help with snoring too – thank us later!).

4. Consider varying lifestyles

Many people view the bedroom as simply a place to get your head down after a long day’s work. They paint the walls, lay a carpet, place a bed in the centre, and think the job is done. But your bedroom can be so much more than that!

Your bedroom can be a designated relaxation zone, helping you to unwind way before bedtime. Talk to your partner about your ideal environments together. Perhaps you’ve always dreamed of a cosy reading nook with an armchair and bookshelf. Maybe you’d like to create a serene workspace where you can focus. What about a stunning Hollywood dresser with lights around the mirror? Or a zen yogi space for some nighttime stretching?! The options are endless.

Whatever you choose, make sure to get the green light from your partner first. This should be a collaborative process – so don’t go installing that retro Pac-Man arcade machine without getting their approval. You’ve been warned…

5. Mix and match textures for added depth

The bedroom should always be a place where you want to dive into and snuggle down in, especially when you share it with your other half. Mixing different materials is a great technique for adding texture, warmth and depth to a room.

We love how our textured House Beautiful Margot Bouclé Bed Frame is dressed here with different blankets, throws and cushions, for a cosy, comfortable feel. Try layering different materials to keep things interesting, and you could always switch up your bed linens from season to season. For example, in summer, go for light, breathable fabrics to create a breezy paradise. In winter, swap your thin layers for thick knitted blankets and fluffy throws.

6. Embrace Feng Shui for a serene energy flow

Redesigning your bedroom offers the perfect opportunity to experiment with new design techniques. If you have trouble getting to sleep at night, a bit of Feng Shui might be in order.

The key principles of Feng Shui are all about enhancing the energy flow around a room by strategically placing furniture in specific points, using natural materials and calming colours to create a balanced, zen-like space. Interested? Here are some top feng shui tips to get you started:

  • Position your bed centrally in the room – Ideally place the bed against a wall but not quite touching it so energy can flow around it.
  • Use symmetrical nightstands – Balance and symmetry are very important for good Feng Shui in the bedroom, so place a bedside table either side of your bed to help improve the harmony in your room.
  • Banish mirrors from your eyesight – Mirror placement can be tricky when implementing bedroom Feng Shui. They bounce energy around the room and can be distracting when trying to sleep, particularly if one is facing directly towards you. You can still have mirrors in your bedroom but position them so they’re out of sight when you’re in bed.

7. Add soft lighting for a romantic atmosphere

Never underestimate the power of good lighting to transform a space. We’d recommend skipping the big lights and placing a number of small lamps around the room to create beautiful corners of light and shadowy areas, for a stunning ambience.

To create a decadent look in your bedroom, think about adding some beautiful statement lampshades. This is an effortless way to level up existing lightbulbs in your room. Or, if you want something seriously opulent, why not hang a chandelier above the bed, like we have here with our Deacon upholstered bed? Now that’s elegance.

Need more bedroom lighting ideas? We’ve got you covered.

Top tip: Make sure to think about the colour of your lightbulbs and what kind of effect they create! White bulbs can create a crisp, clean, minimalistic look, whilst yellow bulbs set a warm, cosy mood.

8. Utilise clever storage

If you’re new to sharing with a partner and are worried about trying to fit twice as many belongings into one room, we’d recommend looking for clever storage solutions.

Take our storage beds, for example. These innovative beds are a two-for-the-price-of-one piece of furniture which offers ample storage space, keeping your bedroom tidy and clutter-free, whilst also being a comfortable place to rest at night.

Plus, they’re available in a whole host of assorted sizes, shapes, colours and fabrics, so you can match your bed to the rest of your bedroom aesthetic. Who says practical must compromise style?! We love our Sutton Upholstered Ottoman Bed Frame in neutral dark grey to please both parties, which features a plush padded headboard. Just look how much storage you can fit under there!

9. Choose meaningful decor together

Whilst moving house and decorating can bring their stresses, it’s important to pause and reflect on the excitement of the process. You’re building a cohesive space with your loved one, so try to enjoy the memories that you’re making.

To help you along, think about choosing decor for your bedroom that’s meaningful to you both. Perhaps there’s a nostalgic piece of art that you want to hang above the bed. Or maybe there was a beautiful bedroom that you stayed in during your honeymoon that you’d love to recreate. There are plenty of ways you can incorporate some nostalgia into your new sleeping space, and it’ll be all the more rewarding getting into bed every night if you love the design you’ve chosen.

Top tip: Pinterest is great for saving pins of existing bedroom designs or aesthetics that you like and creating a collaborative mood board to envision your joint dream bedroom.

Building a nest and designing a bedroom with your partner is more than choosing a paint colour that you both like. By collaborating on the design process with your other half you can create a truly special shared space that fosters connection, intimacy, and comfort. Who knows, you may even enjoy the process along the way…
