There’s plenty to shout about when it comes to British interior designers. From the masters of quintessentially British charm to up-and-coming rising stars who are daring to push contemporary boundaries, the UK is a real powerhouse for interior design.  

Here, we’ve handpicked a dozen of our favourite British interior designers, featuring an array of diverse design philosophies and styles that incorporate British influences, as well as influencers from all corners of the world.  

1. Nicky Haslam

First up, we have interior designer and socialite, Nicholas Ponsonby Haslam. Founder of the London-based interior design firm, Nicky Haslam Studio, Haslam is renowned for his original, timeless designs. According to the studio, Nicky Haslam’s style is “civilised and glamorous, layered with a historical knowledge combined with the essentials of our contemporary lifestyles.”  

His designs are full of character and wit, often focusing on creating playful, sophisticated welcoming areas and using nods to the past which are truly timeless.

How about a dragon? Kelly Hoppen CBE may not be able to breathe fire, but she certainly knows how to design a jaw-dropping space. The South African-born British interior designer and author has won countless accolades for her designs and was even a dragon on BBC’s Dragons’ Den back in the 2010s.   

Whilst her design style is ever evolving, her trademark look is a blend of East and West aesthetics: “characterised by clean lines, neutral tones, and meticulous attention to texture and detail” for a stunning, contemporary look.

Her furniture design company, FBC London, is dedicated to crafting unique pieces that reflect the “ever-changing textures, colours and patterns that nature provides.” All of Fiona’s designs pay respect to time-honoured techniques and craftsmanship, whilst looking to the future.

4. Ben Pentreath

Driehaus Prize – an award “given to a living architect whose work embodies the highest principles of traditional and classical architecture and urbanism in contemporary society.”  

Often working with listed and historic buildings, Pentreath’s studio designs tend to honour the type of sophisticated elegance that you see in older British architecture. Think grand stately homes and quaint London townhouses.

Known for his “broad range of styles and ability to create globally–inspired, sophisticated, and inviting interiors,” Martyn has his fair share of celebrity clients, from the Kardashians to Cher! His designs celebrate beauty, comfort, and his own words: “a touch of the unexpected!” If it’s good enough for Kris Jenner, it’s good enough for us…

Meet your new favourite duo, Sophie van Winden and Simone Gordon, who founded Owl Design in 2014 – thanks to their shared love of joyful, daring design.  

Owl Design’s slogan is “space for positive living.” Through balancing form with function, their mission is to create uplifting interiors that have a lasting positive impact on the people who inhabit them every day – because that’s what it’s all about, right?

Tala is also known for her bold approach to using rich, opulent materials in her work, as well as integrating elements of surprise by transforming everyday spaces into exciting, inspiring interiors.
