Are Divans Comfortable?

Last updated: February 2024

Divan beds are most comfortable for sleepers who enjoy a slightly firmer mattress. Divans have a more solid surface than a bed frame with slats, due to their platform top which ensures your mattress doesn’t lose its stability.

The gaps in a slatted frame mean your mattress has more open space, allowing it to better respond to your weight. This means slatted frames offer a slightly softer comfort grade than if you were to place your mattress on a divan base, depending on your mattress.

However, it’s important to note that the effects of a bed frame or base on your mattress are minimal. The most important decision you’ll make for the comfort of your sleeping space is the mattress you choose.

For those who enjoy a spongy yet supportive sleeping surface, choose a soft comfort grade with memory foam, gel, or latex layers. Place your mattress on a solid divan base to add a slight extra level of firmness without going into the realms of a medium or firm mattress.

The same approach works for all comfort grades too. If your mattress is slightly softer than you’d like, a solid divan base can be the change you need for the perfect night’s rest.

Are slats or divan bases better?

There are pros and cons to both slatted bed frames and divan bases. Where one provides greater durability, the other provides greater ventilation. Like with any bed or mattress purchase, your decision needs to be made based on your specific needs. Here are a few things to consider:

  • A bed frame with slats provides greater air flow to your mattress. This helps promote hygiene and can enhance the lifespan of your mattress.
  • Divan bed bases typically last longer than a bed with slats. That’s because slatted frames are more liable to breakage through improper use. So while we don’t (openly) encourage jumping on your bed, if your children are likely to do so, a more solid bed base could be a wise choice.
  • Divans come with storage, typically in the form of two or four drawers. This helps save space in smaller rooms and provides the perfect place to store bedsheets or out-of-season clothes.
  • Beds with slatted frames typically offer a greater variety of styles. Check out our wooden bed frames to see the broad range of designs on offer. Expect everything from country-chic rattan frames with sprung slats to budget-friendly beds with grooved panel detailing.

Can you use any mattress on a divan bed?

You can use any type of mattress on a divan bed. However, as the solid base slightly reduces the responsiveness of the mattress layers, you may be best with a mattress designed to respond to your body.

Memory foam is ideal but also consider gel and latex. All three of these mattress types are great for contouring around the pressure points of your body. For more information on the benefits of all the different types of mattress, check out our mattress types guide.
