Choose a theme

It’s time to get festive! When switching your home decor from autumn to winter, we’d recommend picking a theme. This way, you can follow easy guidelines for colours and patterns, and your bedroom will look like a show home in no time!

Here are our favourite wintry bedroom themes:

  • Winter wonderland: If you’re a fan of whites and neutrals, then this is the theme for you. Transform your bedroom into a glistening snow globe by switching your bed linens to all white, add texture with soft, fluffy rugs and decorate with “snow-sprinkled” foliage like a statement wreath above the bed. If you’re using lights, make sure they’re white bulbs (as opposed to yellow) to keep the room looking frosty and fresh.
  • Traditional red and green: There’s a reason that red and green are Christmas staples. Traditional, timeless and undeniably wintry, one of the easiest ways of transforming your bedroom into the house in Home Alone is by adding pops of this colour combo. Make simple updates through cushions, blankets and festive ornaments. Patterns-wise, tartan is a great way to incorporate these classic colours and add even more of a festive look.
  • Festive foliage: If you’re more of a minimalist, you could keep your textiles the same and just add a bit of festive foliage for the wintertime. Think green garlands placed over your bed frame, a Christmas wreath hanging above your bed – or even a full-blown Christmas tree in the corner if you fancy taking things up a notch. Don’t forget the presents under the tree…

Add winter warmth

When it comes to hunkering down for the winter months, make sure to prioritise warmth. Now’s your chance to crack out your thickest, snuggliest blankets and switch your duvet to your highest tog.

We recommend the Silentnight Hibernate 13.5 Tog Duvet, which is filled with super cosy fibres that’ll keep you warm all winter long. Plus, it has a luxuriously soft microfibre cover and is hypoallergenic so will leave you feeling rested and refreshed for whatever winter activities you have planned (we’d recommend gingerbread house building).

Snuggle up with textured textiles

Texture is key, so make sure to mix up your textiles to add some depth to your winter bedroom look. We love chunky knitted throws and faux fur blankets in the winter season because they’re super snug. Try layering up your bed with a mix of different textured throws and cushions to create the cosiest, plush set-up. But, be warned: the cosier the bed, the harder it is to get up on those frosty mornings…

Use candles for cosiness

Winter is the perfect excuse to splash out on some new candles to set the ambience. After all, it’s likely that you’re going to be spending far more time inside in winter than you are in the summer months.

Not only are candles great for mood lighting on those cold, dark evenings, but they also smell amazing. To match the season, we’d recommend warm, spiced scents like cinnamon, cranberry, spiced orange and plum. Almost good enough to eat!

Brighten up with pastel hues

Springtime is all about new beginnings; the first buds are beginning to bloom, baby lambs are born, and everything gets a pastel makeover. That’s where your interior comes in. By aligning your colour scheme to the shades of spring, you’re sure to feel inspired as we enter this hopeful new season.

Think pretty pinks, mellow yellows, gorgeous mint greens and cool, duck egg blues. Choose just one shade to dot around your bedroom or why not inject a little of each to create a rainbow of hues. Not only do pastel hues brighten up your space, they’re a welcome change after those long, dark winter nights.

Swap to lightweight textiles

As the season changes to spring, it’s time to start shedding some of those winter layers for another year. To create a beautiful bed that’s fit for springtime, we’d recommend starting with lightweight bedsheets in crisp white.

To style, swap your chunky knitted blankets for a thin, pastel throw. Consider a beautiful floral pattern or a sweet polka dot, and add some cushions in matching colours. Bonus points for matching patterns!

Incorporate greenery

Since spring is associated with new life, why not add some actual life into your bedroom by incorporating some house plants? From calming peace lillies to funky snake plants, there are plenty to choose from. Not only do they look beautiful, but bedroom plants are said to help you sleep better, too! You could also consider channelling this into your decorations and embrace a botanical theme

Add vibrant colours

Summer is the perfect opportunity to experiment with vibrant colours and give your bedroom a bold dopamine makeover

Speaking of colour schemes, there are plenty to choose from. The sunny season may bring different associations for different people. For instance, one person may instantly think of a great British staycation on the coast, with nautical blues and whites. Others may be reminded of a tropical beach with golden yellows, oranges and bright fuchsia.

Whatever summer inspires for you, channel it into your bedroom decor and choose a colour palette that represents your ideal summer.

Introduce seasonal elements

Seasonal decorations like ornaments, trinkets and garlands are a super easy way to lean into the wonders of each season – so don’t leave the seasonal bunting until Halloween or Christmas time! There are plenty of decorations that you can add to your bedroom to transform it into a summery retreat.

Just look how @hoppyeveleighafter_ has styled their space with serene neutral linens and a pretty white floral wreath above the bed. You can just imagine this bedroom inside a quaint thatched-roof cottage by a blooming meadow. It’s straight out of a fairytale!

Position cheerful greenery

Adding some summer greenery is an ideal way to spruce up your space in the sunny season. From large potted monstera and palm plants to dainty eucalyptus leaves positioned in a vase, there are so many ways to add some foliage to your bedroom.

Top tip: Whilst fresh flowers and plants look great in the bedroom, they can be difficult to manage. If you’re a busy bee that needs a low-maintenance alternative, why not invest in some artificial flowers? This way, you can regularly switch up your flowers and store your summer bouquet away until next summer.

Renewing your decor from summer to autumn

Adopt warm colours

The autumn season has arguably the cosiest colour palette; think warm, inviting hues that reflect the changing leaves and pumpkin patches. To update your home decor in line with autumn, we recommend beginning by reviewing your colour scheme. Our favourite autumnal shades are:

  • Orange and burnt orange
  • Mustard yellow
  • Burgundy and plum
  • Rust and wine red
  • Earthy brown and beige
  • Olive and sage green

Remember, you don’t need to repaint your walls in your chosen autumn colours! Simply incorporate these shades through accessories and accent pieces to transform your home into a warm, autumnal haven.

Add cosy textiles

Naturally, when the clocks go back, the temperatures begin to drop. Autumn offers the perfect opportunity to switch up your textiles and snuggle down for a movie marathon in bed. Replace your light summer linens with a fluffy autumnal duvet and dress your bed in oodles of layers. Think cottagecore, but even cosier – if that’s possible!

Materials that work great for blankets in autumntime are warm wool, plush velvet and super soft chenille. You could also consider replacing your cushion covers with cosy autumnal prints and patterns, and a fluffy rug to keep your feet toasty when you get out of bed in the morning.

Infuse seasonal fragrances

Fragrances are an effortless way to capture the essence of a season without making any major changes or investments. Candles, wax melts, reed diffusers and plug-in air fresheners are all great choices for adding a scent.

Whatever your preference, make sure to choose a smell that reflects the snug autumn vibes. Scents like warm, spiced cinnamon and nutmeg or smokey cedarwood are sure to create a cosy ambience.

Hang an autumn wreath

Autumn is full of festivities – just one of the reasons why we love it so much! Why not create a seasonal display above your bed to match the mood? There are plenty of ready-made autumnal wreaths featuring green and orange foliage that are sure to add some instant festive cheer to your room.

Alternatively, you could have a go at making your own DIY wreath! This is a great seasonal activity that you can do with the whole family – after all, nothing looks quite as good as decorations that are made with love…

Embrace pumpkin decor

Speaking of festivities, why not incorporate some of the spooky season into your autumnal decorations? You could place a real pumpkin in your bedroom to add a little Halloween spirit. Or why not invest in some small, artificial pumpkins or a pumpkin garland that you can drape above your bed? This way, you can use them time and time again, simply store away in the loft when it’s time to transition to your winter decor.

The importance of versatile furniture

The key to mastering your seasonal makeovers is investing in versatile furniture. In the bedroom, this means opting for a neutral, beige bed frame. Not only is it calming, zen and perfect for a relaxing bedroom atmosphere, but it provides a blank canvas so you can easily switch up your bedroom accessories each season.

This way, you can update your bedroom through simple changes like swapping your bed sheets, cushions, throws and statement pieces like ornaments, vases, plants, and picture frames.
